Joe-Ann Moser, a 2009 graduate of Millard North High, Omaha, Nebraska, and sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania, was presented the prestigious John Chrystal Intern award for her work as a Borlaug-Ruan International Intern. Joe-Ann was a Nebraska Hank Beachell Fellow to the Global World Youth Institute in 2008. The program is facilitated by the Malaika Foundation and the University of Nebraska College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences and managed by the World Food Prize Foundation.

Moser completed her International Internship at icipe – African Insect Science for Food and Health in Mbita, Kenya beside Lake Victoria. Her research focused on the population control of the Tsetse fly. Currently the most effective means of Tsetse population control, the “push-pull” philosophy employs repelling collars on livestock to “push” the flies away, and attracting odors on biconical traps in order to “pull” them in.
Moser, now majoring in Biochemistry with a pre-med concentration at the University of Pennsylvania, was selected as a Borlaug-Ruan International Intern after participating in the World Food Prize Global Youth Institute in October of 2008. In June of 2009 she began her eight-week, all-expenses-paid Borlaug-Ruan International Internship. Her attendance at the Global Youth Institute was a prerequisite for international internship eligibility. The Institute exposes high school students to opportunities associated with careers in food, agriculture and natural resource disciplines. Student delegates of the Global Youth Institute interact with World Food Prize Laureates and international experts to discuss issues of food security throughout the world.
Created in 2001, the Chrystal Award is named in the spirit of John Chrystal’s commitment to enriching Iowa’s relationship with the world and his belief that everyone is entitled to a sense of dignity and adequate food.
