2012 World Food Prize Youth InstituteStudents have the chance to attend the Nebraska Youth Institute at UNL’s College of Agriculture, Science, and Natural Resources this September. Of these students, six will be awarded Dr. Hank Beachell Fellowships and be chosen to attend the Global Youth Institute in Des Moines, Iowa in October with their mentor / teacher. The winners will be chosen based on their submitted essay Cultivating Innovations to Feed the World. The student is then eligible to attend the Nebraska Youth Institute. A school may submit up to five papers. Deadline for papers June 1, 2012. 2011 Hank Beachell Fellows
Six Nebraska Hank Beachell Fellows attended the 2011 Global Youth Institute at the Normal E. Borlaug International Symposium, Des Moines, Iowa, October 13-15, 2011. Agricultural experts, Dignitaries, and Activists traveled from 75 countries to take part in World Food Prize discussion. Our Nebraska students were chosen based on their essays on “The Millennium Goals: Agriculture to Trade ” and were among 130 students from 24 states and four foreign nations.
The students participated in sessions featuring Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva – former President of Brazil, Howard G. Buffet, CEOs of ADM, Deere & Co., Monsanto, Dupont, Novozymes, and Syngenta, and the Executive Director of the UN World Food Programme.

Borlaug-Ruan Internship
Joe-Ann Moser is the first Nebraskan ever to receive a Borlaug-Ruan Internship. Joe-Ann is now a sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania. She was a 2008 Hank Beachell Fellow and an intern at The International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) in Nairobi, Kenya in 2009.
All Hank Beachell Fellows are eligible to apply for the prestigious Borlaug-Ruan International Internship that provides an all-expenses-paid, eight-week hands-on experience, working with world-renowned scientists and policymakers at leading research centers in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.
